(sponsored skilled workers)

This category is designed for skilled workers who are nationals of countries outside the EEA or Switzerland (except Turkey) who wish to work in the United Kingdom. In order to qualify they will be required to demonstrate that they have a job offer from a licensed sponsor, a valid Certificate of Sponsorship and that they pass the points assessment.

This Tier is divided into the following sub categories:

Tier 2 (General)

This category is for non EEA nationals who have a skilled job offer to fill a gap in the workforce that cannot be filled by a settled worker. In order to qualify the applicant must demonstrate that they have a sponsor and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. Points will be awarded based on salary and allowances, sponsorship, English language skills and available maintenance (funds).

Under this category leave will normally be granted for an initial period of three years. Applicants will be entitled to apply for settlement after five years.

Please note that for the year from 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012 a maximum of 20,700 skilled workers can come to the United Kingdom under Tier 2 (General) to do jobs with an annual salary below £150,000. There is no limit on the number of workers coming to the United Kingdom to do jobs with an annual salary of £150,000 or above.

Tier 2 (Minister of Religion)

This category is for people who wish to take up employment or a post or roles within their faith communities within the United Kingdom and includes Ministers of Religion undertaking preaching and pastoral work, missionaries or members of religious orders. Applicants must demonstrate that they have a sponsor and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship and will be awarded points based on their Certificate of Sponsorship, English language skills and available maintenance (funds).

Leave will initially be granted for a period of three years and applicants will be entitled to apply for settlement after five years in this category.

Tier 2 (Sports Person)

This category is for elite sports people and coaches who are internationally established at the highest level and will make a significant contribution to the development of their sport. In order to qualify applicants will need to demonstrate that they have a sponsor and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship with a governing body. Points will be awarded based on a Certificate of Sponsorship, English language skills and available maintenance (funds).

Leave will initially be granted for a period of three years and applicants will be entitled to apply for settlement after five years in this category.

Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer)

This category is for employees of multi-national companies who are being transferred by their overseas employers to a UK branch of the organisation either on a long term basis or for frequent short visits. This sub-category is divided into further categories of long term staff, short term staff, graduate trainees and skills transfer. In order to qualify applicants must demonstrate that they have a sponsor and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. Points will be awarded based on salary and allowances, sponsorship and available maintenance (funds). In addition applicants must meet the English language requirement if they are applying under the long term staff sub-category and are extending their stay for up to three years.

Tier 2 (Family Members)

Family members of Tier 2 migrants are able to accompany them to the United Kingdom subject to demonstrating that they have the required level of maintenance funds available.
